Field Trips

Our first grade team is trying to decide what to do for our end of the year field trip. I'd prefer a somewhat educational field trip, but we usually do something to celebrate how hard everyone worked and the progress each child made. Some ideas include: miniature golf/bowling, movie theatre to watch the G rated movie of our choice, nature walk, picnic, walking trip around the city, dairy farm, zoo... I want to get some input from other teachers on what you've done, and also from the parents on what you'd like us to do. Parents, feel free to comment/email me a suggestion. I'd love to hear what everybody thinks! :)

We go see Stephen Fite (children's musician) in concert....the kids love it! We also go to a 'paint your own pottery' place.

Discovery museums (hands-on science), orchards, grocery stores (some offer economic programs), or aquariums.

We usually go to an interactive science museum. Totally fun and educational at the same time.

Last year, we went to the circus. This year, we went to a hands-on kid's museum. Both were super awesome.

We are going to Monkey Joe's for our end of the Year 1st grade party. We cannot have something special to eat on campus so this way we can work around doing that. In the past we had a luau, went to the park and had a cook-out and concert with a parent that is a singer, etc. The kids love Monkey Joe's around here!

As a parent I don't like the first few ideas. Fun and not completely education is OK but seriously?! NOT a movie! PLEASE!

Our Children's Theater field trip was awesome! If you have a children's theater in your area it would be a great place to go. Entertaining like a movie, but the productions were based on children's books ie: Dr. Seuss, Goodnight Moon, Alexander and the Terrible..., Where the Wild Things Are etc. You'd probably want to add more to the trip though. Our trip lasted about 3 hours start to finish.

We went for a trip to the Children's Theater in my city. It was spectacular! If you have one in your area it might be a good consideration.

I teach 1st grade and we go to the apple orchard in the fall. We also take a spring trip, right before school gets out for the summer, to our state college about an hour away. They have a farm there, where the kids learn about all the animals. They also make milk and ice cream which the kids get to see. They LOVE it! We spend the whole day there!

We visit The Children's Hospital. We don't go into the rooms, but they set up the auditorium in several stations. We rotate and they tell/show us what happens if we ever have to have an X-Ray, go to the emergency room, talk to us about poisons, etc. It's really a lot of fun and very informative.

This year we are going to a Strawberry Patch after studying plants. We have never done this before, but we're looking forward to it. My husband and I take our kids every year and we love doing it as a family, so I'm sure it will be fun with a bunch of firsties.

My favorite first grade field trip is going on a tour of a grocery store (Whole Foods). We do this with our units on raw material to market and consumers and producers. We eat lunch there then we go to a local ice cream factory and do a quick tour there too. Of course, we follow up with a bit to eat too.
