Hop Scotch and My Kings and Queens

We played a bunch of fun games today. I find during this time of the year the kiddos are so antsy and therefore need more active/involved games. These are two of my favorites.

1. Hop Scotch
We play this a bunch of different ways. Today I had flash cards with different sound spellings on them. A child stands behind a chair and tosses a bean bag onto the mat. Then they hop to the bean bag, reading the cards along the way. It was great fun!

2. The Crown Game
I saw one of our kindergarten teachers playing this game, and had to find a way to use it in my class. They LOVE it! We used it to review our spelling words. I choose one King or Queen at a time to come sit in the royal throne. They put on a crown with a little pocket in the front. I put one word in the pocket, so they can't see it. The class spelled the word, and the King/Queen had to guess what the word was. In Kindergarten they did it with sounds. The class said the sounds in a word, and the King/Queen had to put them together and say the word. Either way, tons of fun! Any other ideas on how to use this crown?

That's very cute! I love the crown! When I was subbing in a 1st/2nd grade class, we played "hot seat". Pretty similar to your kind/queen game except instead of a spelling word I put a noun in the pocket. Then the students took turns describing the word without saying it {which took a lot of practice!}. It was fun and the kiddos loved it!

I love the pocket on your crown!! I pick 2 kids each day at the end of our writing workshop to be King & Queen of Writing. They get to share their writing that day and wear the gold sparkly crown {made from bulletin board border!!} the rest of the day. I never thought about making it into a blending game. Thanks!

Cute idea!! I think a guessing game with numbers would be fun...it is greater than...it is less than...or even math sums and equations.

I've seen a math game that would be perfect with the crown. Children play in groups of three. Two children wear a crown. Each pick a number card to put in their crown. The third person adds the two cards together and says the answer out loud. The other two children try to be the first to guess which number is on their crown (by using the "big number" minus the number on the crown they can see). Hope that makes sense. I've been wondering how I could make the game work. The crowns would be perfect.

I like the idea of guessing the number! I was thinking perhaps the kids could give clues about the word and the person wearing the crown would have to guess the word AND spell it. "Its an action word. It has a long E sound. It has 3 letters. It ends with a T sound."

I saw something similiar done by my colleague. We were studying 2D and 3D shapes. She would put the shape on the crown and then have the students describe the shape while the person wearing the crown guessed. I am going to try this idea now with our spelling words.
